The Old Testament Books can be divided in four categories:
The Books of the Law (a.k.a. Pentateuch or Torah):
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy - written by Moses, which describe from the Creation to the end of the time the Jewish people spent in the wilderness.The Historical Books:
Joshua, Judges, Ruth, First Samuel, Second Samuel, First Kings, Second Kings, First Chronicles, Second Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther - which tell the history of the nation of Israel and describe from the conquest of the Promised Land to Israel's Restoration after the Babylonian captivity.
The Poetical Books (a.k.a. The Books of Everyday Wisdom or The Writings):
Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes,Songs of Solomon.
Prophets Two divisions:
Major Prophets:
Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel.
Minor Prophets:
Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi.

The New Testament Books can be divided in four categories:
Biography:
Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - which tell the life story of Jesus. The first three Gospels are similar in content and structure and are also called the "Synoptic Gospels".
History:
Acts or Acts of the Apostles - which recounts the early history of Christianity when the Apostles began to preach the Gospel.
Letters (a.k.a. Epistles):
Romans, 1 Corinthians, 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, 1 Timothy, 2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon, Hebrews, James, 1 Peter, 2 Peter, 1 John, 2 John, 3 John and Jude - written by Paul and other authors.
Prophecy:
Revelation or Book of the Revelation to John - which is the only New Testament book to focus entirely on prophecy.
